Description

Students will spend week one focusing on developing their command of legal English.
In the second week, students will hone their examination technique.
During their stay, students also visit a local Crown Court, to observe legal English in action.

Aims and objectives

Students will be equipped to deal confidently with the TOLES Examination, becoming familiar with the examination components.

Progression routes

A TOLES qualification provides proof of English competency at 3 levels.
Students can work up through the 3 qualifications as their English progresses.

Course Outline

The Legal English course covers fifteen areas of law and includes the study of real court trials in order
to enhance your learning experience. You will work on all four English language skills within a legal
context as well as learning specific legal terminology and how to use it appropriately.

The course includes preparation for the Test of Legal English Skills (TOLES) so there is emphasis on the
exam techniques and study strategies required to pass the exam.

TOLES is internationally recognised and is a step towards reaching the standard of legal English
required by employees such as in international commercial law firms, in-house legal teams in private
companies and top-class translators.

Topics covered include: Commercial law, contracts, litigation process, employment, bankruptcy and
insolvency.

Further topics: Corporate Law, Employment Law, Aspects of International Law, Business Associations, Debtor-Creditor, Negotiable Instruments, Contract law, Competition, Real Property, Sale of goods, Intellectual Property and Secured transactions.
